If you scroll through my Instagram feed, you’ll notice that I definitely have favorite spots I like to photograph in San Francisco. Here’s a guide for my top 5 locations, what the location is perfect for, and when you can snap your next winning Instagram post.
The open grassy fields and stunning bayside view make Fort Mason a perfect escape from city life. When the infamous San Francisco fog decides to hold off, you can catch a nearly 360 degree view of the city including Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marina, the Financial District, and North Beach!

🕑: the golden hour
3. The Castro
Overflowing with vibrant rainbows and LED lights, the Castro is full of life and a great time on a Saturday night! Get a classic shot walking along the rainbow crosswalks at 18th and Castro St., or a dramatic shot down Castro St. with the endless rows of houses climbing up the hills of SF.

🕑: I shot this photo around 4pm right before sunset, but I’d say anytime is good!
5. The Exploratorium
The Exploratorium is a museum along the Embarcadero encouraging visitors to explore what they already know through different lenses, such as science, art, and the human perception. Divided into six galleries, including Tinkering, Seeing and Listening, and Living Systems, you’ll find a wide variety of intriguing compositions and subjects all under one roof.

🕑: Anytime EXCEPT the weekends. While I love kids, it’s pretty overwhelming
Check out the Exploratorium website for more information.
2. The Painted Ladies
This iconic row of historical Victorian houses along Steiner St. and Hayes St. is a must-see when visiting SF. You can get a good angle from the grassy hill across the street at Alamo Square for the perfect selfie or group shot.
📷: portraits, group shots, and an excuse to use that Full House reference for your caption 😉
🕑: just after sunset but not quite the blue hour, and on a weekday. It gets insanely crowded during the weekend, and you don’t want to fight someone for your spot
4. Crissy Field
This long open beach lined with spacious walking paths is perfect for taking your pup out for an adventure! You can get cute candids and action shots of you, your friends, and your pup with the Golden Gate Bridge as a one-of-a-kind backdrop.
📷: scenery, candids, action shots, and puppies!
🕑: anytime during weekdays—it gets really crowded over the weekend
